I just love all the glittery things and cute wrapped presents lying around at Christmas time. And honestly, who doesn’t?
In order to be popular on social media these days, you need to be cute and you need to be pro in taking selfies. As I have no problems with cuteness, just need to figure out the second part. Obviously, the bigger the camera – the better the photos!
And so, I enrolled on a photo class, borrowed a bad-ass camera from my friend and prepared myself to become a pro selfie shooter. In the class I found myself surrounded by middle-aged women, happy Indian guys and a photographing instructor, who was laughing nervously looking me with a big DSLR… as if she never saw a polar bear with a camera before.
Soon enough I learned that in fact the auto-mode that I was almost always using was the worst possible thing to do and that M would be more useful for Medvedik. As well it turned out that for a good photo you need a good speedlight (this is what they call flash these days) and a tripod (which would be a tricky part, as there is no way I can reach a camera mounted on a tripod). And it turns out that all of this also costs a fortune. And it weights as 150 of tiny polar bears like me.
If you can actually carry this thing around with you… which is not my case. I guess I am doomed with asking people to document my life as I will continue being cute, but sadly not very good at taking selfies.
It was another lovely morning and I woke up, stretching my paws and opened my eyes to say hello to happy sunshine, looking through the window.
I was ready for the new adventures. I took a quick shower in a sink, desperately trying to wake up.
Today there was a visit planned to go to a unique place created by Mother Nature called Seven Coloured Earths. I packed a small sandwich with tuna so that I would not be hungry on the way, and started off on the adventure.
I was always interested in everything that was not man-made. The reason for that was that since I had to leave the Arctic due to the Shell company taking away my home, I don’t trust man-made things as much as I trust Mother Nature. There was lot of bear families that lived happily in the Arctic before people came in search of black gold, kicking polar bears out of their habitats.
To minimize the harm I used a public bus this time. After having bumped his head couple of times on quite a potholed road to the national park, I arrived to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the waterfalls. It was a hot sunny day, and I would not be myself if I didn’t try to go for a swim in such a nice place. I looked around and didn’t notice and signs prohibiting swimming, so I just climbed over the fence and started my way to the waterfall. Approximately 30 seconds later there was a guard, appearing somewhere out of the bushes, saying: “Excuse me, sir. You are not allowed to swim in the waterfall!”.
“Why not?” asked Medvedik, not believing his ears. “It is a Natural Wonder protected by the Government!”. “You know,” answered Medvedik, “if you read the news, you’d know that I am also a natural wonder, unfortunatelly not protected by anyone, because the Arctic belongs to no one, but I think it will be okay if one natural wonder use the other one”, said Medvedik with a grin. “I don’t think so, sir’, answered the guard, unimpressed by Medvedik’s speech, and showed him the way back.
“No worries”, – I said, and followed the sign showing the way to the next Natural wonder. The sun was shining profoundly, and I was getting a little bit hot, so I turned right to rest in the shade of a tree. I sat down on the grass and took out my tuna sandwich, ready to have a little quite deserved snack.
– Hi, little fellow, you mind sharing that piece of divine smelling lunch you have?
I looked around and saw a gigantic turtle that could eat me right away, so I figured it was a better idea to share my lunch.
– Sure, hello, hi! You can have it, if you want, – Medvedik laughed nervously.
– You look like a nice fellow. You want a ride on an old turtle like me?
– Sounds fantastic, – said little bear, climbing on the turtle’s back.
The ride was much less exciting than it sounded, as the turtle was moving very slow and besides, stopping every five meters to eat some grass. I hopped off and saw Seven Coloured Earths right in front of me. The view was absolutely stunning, the colours were playing in my eyes and I felt like I was caught in a rainbow of emotions. I wanted to cover himself with every colour of dust from this Earth and become a colourful bear, but the guard was on the watch, so I was simply enjoying the view, preserving my natural whiteness and thinking about catching up on lunch in the nearest future.
Hello, dear friends!
It is time for us to have a little bit of entertainment and to go on a road trip with Medvedik, who grew kind of impatient by just staying in the peaceful hotel all the time.
I picked up the colourful travel book and browsed through looking for places of interest to visit in Mauritius. “Need to explore something green with lots of fresh air”, I thought, unwilling to come back to the land of baking sun and occasional bushes. Botanical garden sounds like a great idea then!
I asked around to find out who is willing to join my adventures, but apart from the greedy for money driver, I couldn’t find anyone who would want to go see the exotic collection of trees from all over the world. I hesitated a bit for taking a cab, the garden seemed to be close enough, so I rented a bike instead. This made me feel a much better ecologically conscious bear, although the bike was quite squeaky.
At the gates of the garden there was a guide waiting for me. In fact, the guide was not exactly waiting for me, but he was so happy to see a visitor, that I could not say no to him.
The excursion started with a story about the gates, which were delivered to this botanical garden from … but I got already allured by a massive Baobab at the entrance of the garden. I had never seen anything as thick and impressive in my life. Well, icebergs are quite impressive too, and it would be the coolest thing in the world to see a baobab on an iceberg, I thought. Of course, the first thing I attempted to do after seeing such a massive product of Mother Nature was to climb it. In the beginning it went really well, but then I saw an enormous spider, occupying one of the gigantic tree branches. It gave me such a fright that I immediately fell off and landed right in front of the tour guide, who continued his never-ending story about trees and bushes.
The garden was fantastic, filled in with all kind of fresh smells and lovely-looking plants. I had really good fun playing in the alleys and trying to cross the channel in Victoria Amazonica leaf, playing with the lotus flower, swinging here and forth on the lianas.
Right at the exit of the garden, I saw a beautiful deer.
– Hi, deer! – said Medvedik. – Would you like to make a new friend and maybe go have a cup of green tea somewhere around?
– Hello, Little Bear, – the deer answered lazily. – To be honest, I am very well here with my pals, enjoying some fresh grass, but you can leave your business card and I will call you later. Maybe.
I didn’t have a business card as well as I didn’t have any business. I left the garden, found my bike parked on the side, and left in the direction of the hotel, contemplating about the type of beary business that I could start in order to be able to leave business cards and make friends with deer and other animals.
Everyone needs to go on holidays from time to time. That was what I thought when I saw the fabulous advertisement of the tropical island in a magazine tucked under my front door. I dialed the number, booked a hotel room and an early morning flight. I packed my beach towel and a bottle of sun block, and sailed off for holidays the next day.
I was lucky enough to get a front seat in the plane that promised enough leg room, but was not lucky enough, since I got a neighbour, who was the size of elefant and took all the available space. I figured out that the guy must have been a heavy-weight lifter or a champion in burger eating, so it was only the logical choice to try to stay calm and enjoy the flight in a sleeping mode.
As the bird made of steel started to descend, I opened the curtain and saw the beautiful island, covered with white soft clouds. I wished I could just jump out of the plane at that very moment and play in the alluring clouds. Not long after that I was already on the ground surrounded by the humid air full of tropical smells. I made my way to the small cozy hotel, dropped my luggage and ran down to the gigantic pool wasting no time.
The water was clear and refreshing. I was swimming profoundly on my back, when I noticed a fisherman-looking guy promoting something to the people chilling around the pool. I climbed out and asked if I could join the adventure that everyone else was going to. A moment later I found myself on a sailing boat with the glass bottom, going up and down with the current, making me feel queasy. The boat stopped on the border of the coral reef and all the attendees put on snorkeling masks and jumped off the boat. I approached the skipper and asked him nonchalantly if he had any masks available for polar bears, but for some reason the brown-skinned guy looked back at me as if I was out of my mind.
Never mind, – thought Medvedik, and jumped off bravely, surrendering his body to the waves.
What I saw under water was exceeding any of my expectations. There was a lot of fish. Right there, in front of my eyes. I started rowing in its direction, expecting to have a good snack along with the sea adventure. It was so close, but every time I tried to close my canine teeth on the good-looking fat fish, it got away. I returned to the boat all wet and frustrated. I could not believe that I didn’t catch a single fish today and made a point to train myself better, so that I would be less clumsy next time.
As soon as I returned to the stable ground, I went to the restaurant and ordered a big dorade for dinner.
At least you can’t get away from me, Medvedik thought, deboning the fish. In the end I win!
I went to bed happy that night, seeing dreams of alluring fishes dancing around me in gangham style.
I woke up with a strange feeling in the morning. I thought again and again what could be so special about this day, when I understood that 29th of April was my birthday. Good enough reason to do something special today, I thought. It was a lovely spring day and I decided to go for a walk to get some fresh air.
I ended up going to one of my favourite places in Dubai – Madinat Jumeirah. As I arrived there, I noticed a big sign with Fashion Forward written on it. There was a group of people walking in that direction, and me being a curious bear followed them.
Tried to sneak in the venue but the security guy stopped me at the entrance. “Invitation only!” What kind of place is this that such a cute polar bear can’t get it? Meanwhile, an old nice looking lady asked me which designer I was wearing. “Very nice furs!” she admitted, touching my back. I informed her that I am wearing nothing but Mother Nature. The old lady looked puzzled. “Emilio Pucci? Must be something from the new collection…” I looked at myself and said that I’m wearing nothing, but classics. The lady smiled as we got inside the long hallway with a lot of colourful dresses on the plastic manequins.
All the people were going inside the Hall number 3, so I just followed them. There was a fashion show and a lot of tall and good-looking girls were walking along the catwalk wearing glittering clothes. I found it quite monotonous and boring, so I left after 3 minutes of the show.
My nose lead me to the outside area with the restaurant. There could be no mistake, there were salmon sandwiches on the table! “That’s what I need to feel utterly happy on my Bearthday!” I thought, taking the big plate away, while the waiter was glued to the screen with the fashion show.
I stepped away from the crowd and sat under a tree finishing sandwiches one by one. Suddenly, there was a strong gust of wind and small red flowers started falling off the tree.
“Isn’t it the most gorgeous show ever?” Medvedik thought. “Why are people trying to create some artificial beauty when there is so much beauty around us?” he thought, running back and forth, playing in between of the little red flowers.
