Medvedik goes on a boat trip in Oman

0

One day browsing through Facebook page I came over a group of people who were planning a trip to the northern part of Oman also known as Musandam, and enrolled myself to be a part of their group since I am a cool polar bear and have my own Facebook page as well.

On a warm (around 37 degrees) Friday morning, I climbed to the luggage bag and slept comfortably in someone’s clothes for 3 hours before reaching the very fishy smelling harbour in Oman. This country indeed looks more middle eastern than Dubai does. Particularly, you won’t see any skyscrapers, but mountains instead. The mountains have absolutely no trees or bushes on them, but a lot of goats jumping around. Unclear what those poor goat eat. Or perhaps they have already eaten everything – this is why there is nothing left.

I embarked on the boat excited about the trip. The sun was shining and the captain seemed friendly. I was chilling on the front of the boat with a lot of nice people who were enjoying their drinks, while I was enjoying the fishy smell.

In Oman fjords it is possible to see dolphins swimming around at certain times of the year, but sadly this time we could only smell them, but they were nowhere to be seen.

As the day went by, it was getting hotter and hotter and my nose started to be a little bit sunburnt. Luckily the friendly captain employed a very friendly crew, who was taking a speedboat every couple of hours to bring ice to our luxury boat. I decided to jump on the opportunity of comfortably spending an afternoon in a friendly environment… and to be honest just got out when the stars were high in the sky.

The rest of our group was enjoying the wedding music on a small island called the Telegraph island, while I was trying to have an intelligent conversation with a group of Portuguese people about the advantages of seeing the stars against advantages of seeing Burj Khalifa from 90 kilometres away… at which point a couple of overly happy French people arrived and claimed that they can actually see Burj Khalifa from right there where they are standing.

I remember how bright were the stars from my home in the Arctic. It is something quite of a view that now drilling guys from Shell are enjoying, instead of us… polar bears. The sparkling stars over the dark waters of Oman reminded me of long lost home. But these days, I am not the only one who has left his home in search of a better future in new lands. My friends, I just want to ask you to help everyone who is in need today because tomorrow it could be that you would find your home with your stars taken away by wars or by the nasty drilling guys. And when everyone is at peace, perhaps then the dolphins will show up… because they are happy creatures and don’t like negative energy.

Medvedik Meets a Giant Turtle

2

It was another lovely morning and I woke up, stretching my paws and opened my eyes to say hello to happy sunshine, looking through the window.

I was ready for the new adventures. I took a quick shower in a sink, desperately trying to wake up.

Today there was a visit planned to go to a unique place created by Mother Nature called Seven Coloured Earths. I packed a small sandwich with tuna so that I would not be hungry on the way, and started off on the adventure.

I was always interested in everything that was not man-made. The reason for that was that since I had to leave the Arctic due to the Shell company taking away my home, I don’t trust man-made things as much as I trust Mother Nature. There was lot of bear families that lived happily in the Arctic before people came in search of black gold, kicking polar bears out of their habitats.

To minimize the harm I used a public bus this time. After having bumped his head couple of times on quite a potholed road to the national park, I arrived to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the waterfalls. It was a hot sunny day, and I would not be myself if I didn’t try to go for a swim in such a nice place. I looked around and didn’t notice and signs prohibiting swimming, so I just climbed over the fence and started my way to the waterfall. Approximately 30 seconds later there was a guard, appearing somewhere out of the bushes, saying: “Excuse me, sir. You are not allowed to swim in the waterfall!”.

“Why not?” asked Medvedik, not believing his ears. “It is a Natural Wonder protected by the Government!”. “You know,” answered Medvedik, “if you read the news, you’d know that I am also a natural wonder, unfortunatelly not protected by anyone, because the Arctic belongs to no one, but I think it will be okay if one natural wonder use the other one”, said Medvedik with a grin. “I don’t think so, sir’, answered the guard, unimpressed by Medvedik’s speech, and showed him the way back.

“No worries”, – I said, and followed the sign showing the way to the next Natural wonder. The sun was shining profoundly, and I was getting a little bit hot, so I turned right to rest in the shade of a tree. I sat down on the grass and took out my tuna sandwich, ready to have a little quite deserved snack.

–       Hi, little fellow, you mind sharing that piece of divine smelling lunch you have?

I looked around and saw a gigantic turtle that could eat me right away, so I figured it was a better idea to share my lunch.

–       Sure, hello, hi! You can have it, if you want, – Medvedik laughed nervously.

–       You look like a nice fellow. You want a ride on an old turtle like me?

–       Sounds fantastic, – said little bear, climbing on the turtle’s back.

The ride was much less exciting than it sounded, as the turtle was moving very slow and besides, stopping every five meters to eat some grass. I hopped off and saw Seven Coloured Earths right in front of me. The view was absolutely stunning, the colours were playing in my eyes and I felt like I was caught in a rainbow of emotions. I wanted to cover himself with every colour of dust from this Earth and become a colourful bear, but the guard was on the watch, so I was simply enjoying the view, preserving my natural whiteness and thinking about catching up on lunch in the nearest future.

Medvedik goes snorkeling

Everyone needs to go on holidays from time to time. That was what I thought when I saw the fabulous advertisement of the tropical island in a magazine tucked under my front door. I dialed the number, booked a hotel room and an early morning flight. I packed my beach towel and a bottle of sun block, and sailed off for holidays the next day.

I was lucky enough to get a front seat in the plane that promised enough leg room, but was not lucky enough, since I got a neighbour, who was the size of elefant and took all the available space. I figured out that the guy must have been a heavy-weight lifter or a champion in burger eating, so it was only the logical choice to try to stay calm and enjoy the flight in a sleeping mode.

As the bird made of steel started to descend, I opened the curtain and saw the beautiful island, covered with white soft clouds. I wished I could just jump out of the plane at that very moment and play in the alluring clouds. Not long after that I was already on the ground surrounded by the humid air full of tropical smells. I made my way to the small cozy hotel, dropped my luggage and ran down to the gigantic pool wasting no time.

The water was clear and refreshing. I was swimming profoundly on my back, when I noticed a fisherman-looking guy promoting something to the people chilling around the pool. I climbed out and asked if I could join the adventure that everyone else was going to. A moment later I found myself on a sailing boat with the glass bottom, going up and down with the current, making me feel queasy. The boat stopped on the border of the coral reef and all the attendees put on snorkeling masks and jumped off the boat. I approached the skipper and asked him nonchalantly if he had any masks available for polar bears, but for some reason the brown-skinned guy looked back at me as if I was out of my mind.

Never mind, – thought Medvedik, and jumped off bravely, surrendering his body to the waves.

What I saw under water was exceeding any of my expectations. There was a lot of fish. Right there, in front of my eyes. I started rowing in its direction, expecting to have a good snack along with the sea adventure. It was so close, but every time I tried to close my canine teeth on the good-looking fat fish, it got away. I returned to the boat all wet and frustrated. I could not believe that I didn’t catch a single fish today and made a point to train myself better, so that I would be less clumsy next time.
As soon as I returned to the stable ground, I went to the restaurant and ordered a big dorade for dinner.

At least you can’t get away from me, Medvedik thought, deboning the fish. In the end I win!

I went to bed happy that night, seeing dreams of alluring fishes dancing around me in gangham style.

Medvedik quite enjoyed his vacations in France. What not to enjoy? Plenty of croissants, oysters and funny -r- sounds in French language.

He took long walks along the Seine looking with disgust at the occasional dead fish on the bank of the river. Medvedik preferred good healthy fish of the Arctic… which he thought will not be as healthy and tasty anymore thanks to Shell and Gazprom with their massive drilling programs.

Medvedik liked the feeling of the old stone streets. It made him realize how fragile his homeland was. It could just melt and turn into water. Nothing will happen to streets like those. But to be frank he admitted that he wouldn’t enjoy living in a stone land either.

His nose cought a smell of pastry and his paws turned coordinately to the cafe with fresh croissants and hot coffee. Well,  in the end, Medvedik thought,  nobody’s serving you coffees in the Arctic, so c’est pas mal du tout ici.Image

Medvedik took a little break from his daily routine and travelled to France.

He made a mistake of choosing the low-cost airline, which was not so low-cost, by the way.

He had to arrive to the airport pretty early, and the airport to take the flight was located 50 kms from the city, so he was sleepy and grumpy. The service girl told him that his bag was 2 cm’s wider than by standards of their cabin luggage and he had to drop it, paying 50 EUR for a piece of luggage. It made him quite angry but he decided to be cool. He went through the customs without much problems, but in the waiting zone there was no place for him to seat. He thought that some standing would only do him good since he was going to fly for a couple of hours in a sitting position… then he looked at the line waiting to get to the plane (1.5 hours before boarding) and he thought… well, if I get any seat in this strange plane.

He had to fight with other people to get in the plane, but he eventually found a seat and fastened his seatbelt around his white belly. As he prepared to take off, he felt that he was getting a little hungry. He had a can of sardines in his bag, but as soon as he tried to get it out the flight attendant appeared out of nowhere and told him that he could only eat things sold on board. In case he failed to comply with the rules, he would be fined EUR 50.

Oh my god, though Medvedik. This is a nightmare! He closed his eyes and tried to fall asleep. But the notifications and announcement were so loud and pronounced every 2 minutes… Never again, just never again. He looked at the ground disappearing in the clouds, wishing he could just jump out and stay on the comfy and soft cloud.
